Tobacco Road Golf, A Chaotic Adventure

November 6, 2009

Last Saturday, I had the privilege, if that is what you want to call it, to play one of the most difficult courses in North Carolina. The golfing group where I am a member spent the day at Tobacco Road Golf Course in Southern Pines. If you are not familiar with this course, it was not designed by a professional designer, but rather designed by a group of construction workers who moved dirt in their spare time for a place to play during down time. Tobacco Road has been labeled by several golfing magazines as one of the 25 most difficult courses in the U.S. It did not disappoint. From the 1st tee where the initial drive had to be threaded between two steep hills to set up a second shot that had to go over another hill if you wanted to attempt to get up in 2 on this Par 4 hole. I, of course, laid up on the second shot in an attempt to carry the second hill and reach the green in three. As is my game, I came up short on the 3rd shot as I reached the fringe of the green and needed to chip onto the green. The entire course was garnered with such obstacles, many of which could not be seen from the tee box. On one hole, you had to guess the direction of the fairway as there was no way to see it from the green. On the same hole, I experienced a putt on the green that rolled past the hole, off the green, down the hill and ended nearly 50 yards from the middle of the green. When playing this course, you must know that there are no sand traps as you would expect on most courses, but plenty of waste bunkers. The major difference between the two has to do with the consistency of the sand and the shots that can be made from them. In a typical sand trap, the golfer cannot ground the club before taking the shot. However, in a waste bunker, you can ground your club in anticipation of your shot. Also, you cannot approach the shot out of a waste bunker in the same way as you would a sand trap. One of the keys to shooting out of a sand trap is to hit the sand before connecting with the ball. In a waste bunker, the sand is usually more firm and thus, more difficult to hit sand first. Overall, this course is very picturesque and extremely challenging. It is the kind of course that you have to expect you will not score well, but take in the challenges of some amazing shots. On the 18th tee box, you have to hit over the side of a cliff to get the ball into the fairway…a completely blind shot and no guarantee that you will put yourself in position to get on the green in regulation. You must also expect that you will get plenty of exercise even as they encourage you to ride the carts on the fairways. Some are not accessible with a cart and must be walked…not to mention the terrain that must be traversed to get around.
