The best of things: Golf and Charity

Golf and Charity

If you are like me, two things that are important to me are golf and charity. What better way to combine the two, but with a golf tournament. Yes, as the golfing season picks up, there are several golf tournaments for charity that are scheduled for April and beyond. As I learn of tournaments that may interest you, I will be covering them in this blog, so please watch for them.

The first one that I want to mention is one that I heard of this week. The My Community Cares Golf Tournament being held at the Birkdale Golf Club at Lake Norman near Charlotte. I most likely will not participate in this tournament due to the fact that it is located several hours away, but also due to the fact that I will most likely be playing in two different tournaments that week. This tournament is being hosted by Don Longo Cigars with several sponsors to include Food Lion, Qdoba Mexican Grill, Dos Equis and many more. Proceeds from this tournament will go directly to support those affected by the Haiti earthquake. For more information about this great tournament, please contact Georges Onivogui at

A more local tournament that benefits local charities, turn to the Scoutreach Golf Classic to benefit  youth in our community by providing uniforms, handbooks, camperships and registration assistance to local Boy Scouts and the Occoneechee Council district. Some great sponsors of this great event include Capital Broadcasting, Carolina Hurricanes, Hendrick Chevrolet, Wachovia, and WakeMed to name a few. This event takes place on April 26, 2010 at the North Ridge Country Club in North Raleigh. I plan to play at this event and if you would like to join me, please visit to register or to sponsor a team.

A tournament that is personal to me as it benefits the North Raleigh Rotary club, of which I am a member. This tournament is being held at the Wildwood Greens Golf Club in North Raleigh on April 29, 2010. I plan to sponsor a team for this event and would love to see you there for this great event. Some of the charities that this event will help to support include the Literacy Council of Wake County, Food Pantry, Raleigh Rescue Mission, Lake Waccamaw Boys & Girls Home, Wake County Total Life Centers and many more. Rotary International is an organization that is dedicated to service to the citizens of the world. North Raleigh Rotary club, formed in 1967, has supported well over 100 charitable and civic projects within the city, state, nation and internationally. For more information or for registration information about this great event, please contact Mike Riddick at 919-608-0726. As an added bonus, Wildwood Greens Golf Club is waiving the membership fees and giving a reduced monthly rate for all sponsors.

Of course, the granddaddy of all golf tournaments in the Triangle is the Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Tournament. It is set for August 20-22, 2010. For more information about this event to either sponsor, volunteer or attend, please visit their website at As many know, this tournament is moving back to Raleigh and is being held at the new Lonnie Poole golf course on the North Carolina State campus and it benefits cancer research. I have volunteered for this event several years and it is a wonderful experience for all involved.

On a side note, there are many opportunities to purchase a home in a golf community in Wake county. It is a great time to purchase a home as the mortgage rates are the lowest they have been in  years and housing values have declined over the past  year. Add to this, the tax credit for 1st time homebuyers and all existing homeowners is an added bonus. Call if you are looking to buy or sell a home in North Carolina.
